Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment. RMHC Toronto encompasses a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. The families we serve come from throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world. 

We are looking for a Manager, Food Services to join our team in Toronto.  

About the opportunity

Reporting to the Director, Family Services & Programs, the Manager, Food Services oversees all food services aspects necessary to plan, prepare, cook, and serve meals for our families, monitoring inventory and following an approved budget. The Manager, Food Services provides leadership and oversight of our meal program while working closely with our development team to provide engagement opportunities for donors. 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Design creative menus and prepare a variety of quality, nutritious meals.
  • Design standardized food preparation guidelines for staple menu items, reheating, etc.
  • Ensure that all food preparation is in accordance with applicable regulatory guidelines and food hygiene practices.
  • Ensure daily kitchen operations meet cleanliness, infection control, sanitization, and health and safety guidelines.
  • Manage all food and supply inventory ordering, receiving, stocking, and discarding (including food donations), ensuring all food items are stored properly and meet expiration guidelines.
  • Manage inventory and repurpose leftover meals to minimize waste.
  • Ensure kitchen supplies are kept stocked, organized, and labelled for overnight staff / volunteers to set-up.
  • Ensure kitchen and prep area is cleaned at end of shift, and leftovers are packaged and labelled for families.
  • Track expenses and ensure meal program costs remain within budget.
  • Engage and strengthen working relationships with new and existing food program gift-in-kind donors.
  • Ensure all gift-in-kind donations and opportunities are communicated to Development for appropriate stewardship and recognition.
  • Train, lead, and mentor meal program volunteers helping with prep work, cleaning, serving, and packaging meals.
  • Work with the People and Culture Coordinators to coordinate meal program volunteer schedule.
  • Welcome, engage, and host meal program participants with meaningful and skill appropriate tasks.
  • Report equipment needs and repairs to the Director of Family Services & Programs.
  • Performs other duties, as required.


Education & Experience

  • Degree in culinary management or equivalent experience.
  • Food Safety certification and CPR / First Aid certification an asset.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in leading staff and / or volunteers in a commercial kitchen setting. Inventory ordering and management experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Enjoys sharing and teaching others your culinary expertise.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong MS Office skills – especially Excel.
  • Excellent organization, attention to detail, and time management skills.
  • Able to stay calm under pressure.
  • Inclusive and collaborative.
  • Proven leadership skills, including the ability to coach, develop and mentor staff and volunteers.
