Mark Vanderjagt’s Volunteer Story
For Mark Vanderjagt, volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto isn’t just about lending a hand — it’s about being a quiet, dependable source of comfort for families navigating life’s most difficult days.
Mark’s journey with RMHC Toronto began long before he ever stepped behind the front desk. As a teenager working at a McDonald’s Restaurant, he was introduced to the mission of RMHC by a local Owner/Operator who believed deeply in giving back. Staff were often invited to help at the nearest House, planting the first seeds of what would become a meaningful, enduring commitment.
But it wasn’t until years later — when a family member entered hospice care — that the full weight of what RMHC offers truly hit home.
“I realized the importance, and the gift to families, of having a place where a family can be together and only have to focus on their ill member,” Mark reflects. “A place where someone else is taking care of ‘other stuff’ so the family can focus on what’s most important.”
Today, as a front desk volunteer, Mark offers that same sense of relief and welcome to families at the House. His presence is calm, reassuring — the kind that speaks volumes even when words fall short.

He recalls a moment that has stayed with him: a parent returning from a particularly hard day at the hospital, overwhelmed and emotional. “I believe I was the first person they interacted with since leaving, and they were suddenly overcome. They apologized profusely,” Mark shares. “I told them they had nothing to apologize for and that I was there to help in any way I could. After a few minutes, they went up to their room — and you could see some of the weight had lifted. Those are the best days for a volunteer.”

Mark doesn’t underestimate the power of a small act — whether it’s offering a cookie, helping with directions, or simply handing over a laundry pod. “We offer comfort in a warm smile, a helping hand, a listening ear… Families have so much to worry about. We just want to make their stay feel more like a refuge.”
He describes the community at RMHC Toronto as unlike any other: a place filled with people singularly focused on one mission — supporting families. “It’s rare to meet a group so committed to helping others,” he says. “I feel energized when I arrive at the House. There’s always someone ready to support you.”
And what would he say to someone thinking of volunteering?
“You’ll have busy days and quiet days. You won’t always be able to understand what these families are going through — but it will be incredibly rewarding. You’ll see it on a guest’s face: that you’ve helped make a troubling time just a little easier. Their smile, their thanks… that’s all the reward you need.”
Mark’s quiet strength, his empathy, and his unwavering presence are just a few of the reasons why volunteers like him are the heart of RMHC Toronto. Through every moment given, every conversation shared, and every door held open, Mark helps transform the House into something more — a true home away from home.
