Twelve years ago, Naomi Ohayon walked through the doors of Ronald McDonald House Charities Toronto looking for a way to give her time purposefully. What she found was a role that became an anchor in her life and a way to quietly and powerfully support families navigating some of their hardest days.

“I had just graduated from college and was struggling to find work,” Naomi recalls. “I wanted to do something meaningful with my time and start building connections.” She came across a volunteer opportunity at RMHC Toronto and signed up for an introductory session. That simple step turned into more than a decade of dedicated service.

Every Saturday afternoon, Naomi takes her place at the front desk, offering a warm welcome, clear guidance, and calm support. “Volunteering here has given me so much in return,” she says. “I’ve become a more confident person, and I’ve made meaningful, lasting connections.” For Naomi, volunteering is not only a personal passion — it’s also a reflection of a deeply held value: Tikun Olam, the Jewish concept of repairing the world through small acts of kindness and care.

One moment that stands out in her time as a volunteer happened on a quiet evening shift. “There was a late check-in — a family arriving from out of the country — and the Duty Manager asked if I could stay a little longer,” she remembers. “He made it clear he’d understand if I couldn’t. But I stayed.” For Naomi, helping is about supporting the families and the staff too. “That night, just being there at the desk made a difference. I was glad to do it.”

Naomi’s approach is grounded in empathy, reliability, and deep respect for the families and staff alike. “Even the smallest gestures matter — a smile, a listening ear, or simply showing up,” she says. “Being part of the RMHC Toronto community gives me a sense of purpose and a boost for the week ahead. I feel like I can truly be myself here.”

To anyone considering volunteering, Naomi has this to say:
“You’ll always leave the House feeling proud and knowing you’ve made a difference, even if it was something as simple as offering a smile.”
