Since 1981, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto has served as a place to call home for families with seriously ill children undergoing treatment. RMHC Toronto encompasses a House for 81 families in downtown Toronto and seven Family Rooms in hospitals across the Greater Toronto Area and in Sudbury. The families we serve come from throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the world.

We are looking for a Senior Development Officer to join our team in Toronto. 

About the Opportunity

Are you a creative development professional with combined experience in individual giving and annual fundraising in health care or not-for-profit? Do you want to make a lasting difference in keeping families of seriously ill children together and close to the care they need?

We are currently hiring a Senior Development Officer (SDO) who has a passion for philanthropy, brings a depth of experience in portfolio analysis, segmentation and stewardship excellence. The SDO for mid-level giving is an integral part of the development team in providing an excellent donor experience to build a robust mid-portfolio and pipeline.

You will develop, implement and manage strategic fundraising plans for a donor portfolio of 800-1000 individual donors and select foundations. This role cultivates and maintains positive relationships with new and loyal donors with one-time gifts of $500 up to $25,000.  You will create and deliver excellence in stewardship that demonstrates transparency and impact, while sustaining and increasing revenue to meet annual targets. This position reports to the Director of Development.

Hybrid in nature, this role works 2 days/week regularly in the office.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage a portfolio of individual and foundation donors ($500-$25,000) to meet the revenue goals of the portfolio and department aligned with the strategic plan.
  • Create identification and qualification strategies based on portfolio segments including email outreach, phone calls, and in-person visits, to retain donors and build donor pipelines.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Prospect Development and Research Officer to identify opportunities to elevate giving and build pipeline through new prospect identification.
  • Establish goals to move donors along the giving cycle and solicit monthly donations and multi-year pledges where possible.
  • Establish an effective stewardship program for donor segments, which includes appropriate impact reporting.
  • Support all donations and requests for information to provide an excellent donor experience.
  • Prepare donor proposals, correspondence, and stewardship materials as required for effective portfolio management.
  • Support and assist in donor events for the department when needed (cheque presentations, speaking opportunities etc.)
  • Performs other duties, as required.

Qualifications

RMHC Toronto understands that for any role, it’s possible that no one person will possess all of the desired qualifications. The following is an outline of the qualifications we believe are important to bring to the position and/or develop while in the role.

Education & Experience

  • College diploma in Fundraising, Marketing, Sales or related field, or equivalent combination of work experience and education. CFRE designation an asset.
  • 3-5 years progressive experience in fundraising, with a combination of annual fund knowledge and a track record of soliciting and closing donor gifts at the $1k-25k level.
  • Experience working in healthcare or not-for-profit organization supporting children and families is an asset.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities 

  • In-depth knowledge of principles and techniques related to donor acquisition and retention, fundraising, annual fund campaigns, and monthly giving.
  • Understanding of Canada Revenue Agency tax receipting rules and guidelines and the ability to communicate them to donors.
  • Proficient in MS Office and experience with CRM databases (Raisers Edge/RE NXT).
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.
  • Exemplary collaboration and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships.
  • Proven ability to build new and long-term relationships with prospects, donors and volunteers.
  • Proven ability to analyze and segment a portfolio creating tactics to elevate donor experience for each donor segment.
  • Excellent project management skills, information-capture and follow-through.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve fundraising goals.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team, as well as work independently.
  • Strong ability to balance competing priorities, and tight deadlines.
  • Strong degree of comfort with ambiguity, with ability to translate into strategic tactics to advance and enhance existing programs.
  • Willingness and ability to travel, as required.
