RMHC Toronto celebrates its 40th Anniversary in 2021.

This year, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto is celebrating 40 years of keeping seriously ill children and their families together to improve their health and well-being.

RMHC Toronto first opened its doors in April 1981, making it the first Ronald McDonald House in Canada. The concept was brought north of the U.S. border by George Cohon.

The first RMHC Toronto House was located at 365 Dundas Street West. The Dundas House had 19 bedrooms for families with a child receiving cancer treatment at a hospital in Toronto.

The RMHC Toronto story is filled with an unwavering commitment to provide the best care and compassion to as many families as possible. This commitment has safeguarded RMHC Toronto’s status as the largest Chapter in Canada, which includes the current 81-bedroom House at 240 McCaul Street, as well as seven Family Rooms in five hospitals across the GTA and in Sudbury.

“This anniversary is a significant milestone, an opportunity to celebrate our legacy of keeping families together and recognize our ongoing efforts to help even more families in the future,” says Kristy Carscallen, Chair of RMHC Toronto Board of Directors.

RMHC Toronto is extremely lucky to have a strong network of past families, volunteers, donors, long-time partners, and many other supporters who have played an essential role in the organization’s story.

Throughout the year, we will be sharing stories that celebrate the commitment, effort, memories, and milestones that make the House and Family Rooms so special. Stay tuned to learn about ways to get involved with the celebrations and give back to ensure that RMHC Toronto can continue helping even more families in the future.
