When Laura Schmitt’s niece arrived at SickKids Hospital by helicopter, in labour and wearing only a hospital gown, the family had no idea just how critical a role Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) Toronto would come to play in their lives.

Her niece Nadine was born with a serious heart condition that would require complex and risky surgery. As Nadine’s mother, Julia, navigated the terrifying uncertainty of her newborn’s condition, she found not only expert care at the hospital but a safe haven just steps away — a warm and welcoming home at RMHC Toronto.

“I was able to spend the summer with mom and Nadine and quickly realized that not only was RMH a kind and supportive home for so many families, it was also a place where I wanted to volunteer,” Laura says. Thankfully, Nadine’s 13-hour surgery was a success, and today, both she and her mom are healthy and thriving. “They are happy, well, and very grateful for their stay at RMH. And I’ve become a part of the RMH family.”

Since joining as a volunteer, Laura has offered that same spirit of comfort and care to other families during their most difficult times. She’s often the one welcoming them at the front desk, handing out essentials, or simply offering a kind word when it’s needed most.

Over 280 volunteers give their time, their energy, and their hearts to support families when they need it most.

One moment that has stayed with her was when a family shared a video of their teenage daughter ringing the bell after finishing treatment at SickKids. “For them to share such a precious moment with me, and to be heading home after a long and difficult journey, was a gift,” she recalls. “The bittersweet feelings as families say goodbye — happy to be leaving but knowing they will miss the kindness of staff and volunteers — is something to be treasured.”

For Laura, being part of the RMHC Toronto community is a joy and a privilege. “From the moment I applied, I was welcomed with kindness. The support of the staff and fellow volunteers is remarkable. To be part of the RMH family is something I truly treasure.”

She believes that it’s the small, everyday gestures that make a big difference — the warm smiles, the comforting presence, the small acts of thoughtfulness. “Whether it’s handing someone a package from home, feeding the fish with a curious little one, or offering much-needed toiletries, I know I can help bring a little comfort at a difficult time.”

To anyone considering volunteering, Laura has just one word: “YES!” She says, “By giving just a few hours a week, you will experience the joy of being part of a supportive community that provides a soft landing for so many families facing the unthinkable.”
