Jse-Che Lam’s Volunteer Story

Sometimes, the most life-changing moments happen during an ordinary lunch break. For Jse-Che Lam, a casual stroll down Henry Street led her past RMHC Toronto’s communal kitchen — a moment that sparked a journey now nine years strong.

“I was so taken with the space,” she says. “Work was challenging at the time, and I knew I had to make some changes to avoid burnout. I didn’t know much about RMHC Toronto, but something told me I needed to be there.”

That curiosity turned into commitment, and Jse-Che soon found herself behind the front desk — a warm, reassuring presence for families navigating the unknown.

“As a volunteer, you’re like a hotel concierge — but better. You provide comfort, directions, tips on where to get groceries, the closest bakery, stores that carry halal foods and other speciality ingredients. You help make a new, unfamiliar place feel like home,” she says. “That sense of safety, even in the small things, matters more than we realize.”

One moment that remains etched in her heart was when a young boy ran up to the desk to share a milestone: “I got to play outside for the first time today.”

“Such a simple sentence, but so powerful,” says Jse-Che. “That little boy was so thrilled. It reminded me of the beauty of gratitude — and of how many special moments volunteers get to witness here.”

It’s not just the families that keep Jse-Che coming back week after week — it’s the people behind the scenes.

“You’re not ‘just a volunteer’ at RMHC Toronto,” she shares. “The staff genuinely value you. We’re a community. Some volunteers have been here close to 20 years. That says everything.”

For Jse-Che, volunteering isn’t something she does — it’s part of who she is.

“I can’t imagine not doing this. I’m here because I believe in service to others. For families going through the hardest moments of their lives, human connection, care, and respect matter. They make a difference.”

And in that beautifully equipped kitchen she first spotted from the street? Jse-Che found not just a place to help — but a place to belong.
